About Merrymeeting Bay Wildlife Management Area

Merrymeeting Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in coastal Maine where the Androscoggin, Kennebec, and five other rivers merge to form one of the largest freshwater tidal bays in the United States. This unique estuarine environment covers approximately 10,000 acres of wetlands, tidal marshes, mudflats, and forested uplands. The WMA provides important habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, bald eagles, and other wildlife, making it a premier destination for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. The mixture of freshwater and tidal influence creates a dynamic ecosystem supporting diverse fish species, including alewives and Atlantic salmon. The area also plays a critical role in flood control and water quality for the surrounding watersheds. Historically, Merrymeeting Bay has seen human use ranging from Native American fishing sites to colonial settlements and timber industries. Today, the area is managed primarily by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to conserve habitat and support public outdoor recreation. Visitors have opportunities for hiking, paddling, wildlife viewing, and seasonal hunting and fishing. The peaceful, open-water bay offers scenic paddling routes with chances to observe eagles soaring overhead and osprey diving for fish. The WMA’s network of trails and boat launches provides good access to explore the wetlands and river shores. Nearby, historical sites and small towns offer cultural connection points. Merrymeeting Bay Wildlife Management Area offers a rich outdoor experience centered on water-based activities and birding amid an extraordinary natural landscape shaped by tidal rivers.
